Roman,

As someone who's known you for nearly a decade now... I can't believe that you are being put through something like this. How ridiculous!

Stay strong, the truth will set you free!

Dave

San Diego State’s chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists invited me awhile ago to sit on a panel with fellow professionals to discuss ethics on April 17. Just as we were ready to start the event on last night, Leo E. Laurence of Zenger’s Newsmagazine
showed up with a sizable camera. That in itself wasn’t a big deal to me.

What surprised me was that during the panel, as we were talking, he got up and got directly in front of me — within inches of my face and blocking my view of the audience — and snapped photos of me. For what purpose, I don’t know.

With that note aside, below is the latest ...

I was again dismayed by yet more factual inaccuracies and misstatements levied against me and my students in Zenger’s Newsmagazine by its associate editor, Leo E. Laurence.

Students and district academic procedure aside, it is the innuendo and accusations treated as fact specifically directed toward me that I am addressing. His continued publication of this material is unacceptable, and calls into question my reputation in a community I respect.

After its March 2009 print and online publications, I respectfully asked the publisher an opportunity to reply to associate editor Leo E. Laurence’s accusations in a story under the “news” section in which he provided accusations and innuendo without facts to back him up.

Now, in its April 2009 print and online editions, I see again more of this questionable material in which Leo E. Laurence specifically names City Times (identification of me as faculty adviser and my students collectively) and two students by name. As before, it is written as a news piece under guise of fact with no supporting evidence or an opportunity for those named to respond in the article. In an additional online-only story (with link published in print), associate editor Leo E. Laurence now uses the word “dangerous” to describe this situation. Is this a threat?

On April 2, I discovered another strange layer to this ongoing litany. On my way to a class, I noticed a full stack of Zenger’s April magazine on the City College campus with every copy folded to page 11 as the cover, the page on which only Leo E. Laurence's latest story appears. I took a photo just to have it for my records.

This was more than simple distribution of a magazine, as far as I’m concerned. In my view, this appears to be a deliberate act on the part of the publisher and Leo E. Laurence showing malicious intent.
